- KEYMAP is a Windows program which displays the layout of the
- currently installed keyboard. KEYMAP also contains a text window
- in which you can enter text and practice using the keyboard. As
- you type, the corresponding keys on the diagram flash and the
- characters are displayed in the window. KEYMAP can be useful for
- learning the layout of a new keyboard or as an immediately
- available quick reference.
-
- KEYMAP responds to changes to the [intl] section of win.ini.
- In particular, if you change the keyboard layout from the Control
- Panel the keyboard will be redrawn.
-
- KEYMAP has two commands: Key Color is used to change the
- background color of the keys from gray to white. The white color
- is helpful when making a hard copy of the layout as described
- below. Clear removes all text from the practice edit box.
-
- The key markings show the characters generated by the keys
- in several different ways. Characters which do not require the
- right Alt Key are shown on the left. If shifted and unshifted
- forms are the same letter and differ only by case, then they are
- displayed only in upper case on the upper left of the key.
- Characters generated by the right Alt key, Alt-gr and
- Shift-Alt-gr, are shown along the right edge. If shifted and
- unshifted forms are the same letter, then they are shown in upper
- case on the lower right.
-
- KEYMAP does not display keys such as TAB, Caps Lock, Enter,
- Shift, etc. Also, you cannot tell if an accented character is
- actually a dead key directly from the diagram. You must try
- typing the key; if it does not advance, hit the space bar. If
- the accent displays only after space is struck, then you have
- found a dead key. You use such keys to compose letters with an
- accent or other diacritical mark.
-
- The keys are shown in positions typical of a European
- 102-key enhanced keyboard. This program can also be used on a
- 101-key U. S. keyboard. However, such keyboards do not have the
- extra key just to the right of the left Shift key. Otherwise the
- layouts are the same. You can also use KEYMAP on XT and AT
- keyboards but you may see two keys interchanged (on a U. S.
- keyboard, the two keys are the ones containing the grave accent
- and the backslash).
-
- With this version of KEYMAP, you can also simulate
- keystrokes with the left mouse button. The correct characters
- are generated even when the Caps Lock, Shift, and Alt keys are
- engaged. Dead keys also function as expected.
-
- You can print the layout by using Alt-PrintScreen to capture
- the KEYMAP Window to the Clipboard (See your Windows
- documentation for details). Then you can paste the image into
- PaintBrush, edit as required, and then print the result.
- However, you should first set the key color to white. (There is
- a trick for pasting a large image into PaintBrush from the
- Clipboard. First use the View menu to Zoom Out, then the Edit
- menu to paste. You will see a shaded block which you can
- position as desired in the work area. Paste again to get the
- image. Finally, change the View back to normal.)
